Celebrating ten years of my first book Modern Rustic
New episode about how the book came into being
This Autumn marked TEN YEARS since my first book Modern Rustic was published with Ryland Peters & Small (RPS). To acknowledge this important personal milestone I made a new episode for you to watch below where I share some of my memories of how it came to be.
On a personal note, this book changed my career. It was upon the foundation of this book’s success that I was able to build the career I now have, as well as go on to write four more interiors books. And from an interiors point of view I honestly feel that it has stood the test of time.
Featuring homes in Los Angeles, Norway, Scotland, England, and The Netherlands, Modern Rustic shows a variety of ways to bring rustic elements to your home, whether it’s with a bohemian, retro or eclectic spin or perhaps more on the minimal side - we covered it all! And it still feels relevant.
With truly stunning photography by Catherine Gratwicke and beautifully descriptive words by Joanna Simmons, Modern Rustic has a timeless appeal rather than feeling dated as many interiors books can after even a few years. A testament to the wonderful homeowners and designers who welcomed us in as well as Cath’s rich and soulful photography. It’s a book of which I’m still very proud. It is still in print and was even re-released by RPS in 2021 with a gorgeous new cover.
Watch the video to hear an anecdote about that new cover shot (enjoy seeing me struggle to remember where we shot it) as well as the origin of the book idea, and more importantly why I’m wearing a beret indoors. I’ve also added a few of my favourite shots from the book below. I hope you enjoy! x

Ten years ago TODAY we held a launch party at Anthropologie with one of my best friend’s, florist Yolly hosting a wreath workshop with me. I remember it so clearly.
