Hi Emily, I very much enjoyed your intro and totally get your feelings about insta and why you moved to substack. I’m an artist and have this very profound feeling that I’ve lost my direction and have no idea how to find it! So I will follow you with interest and hope to see how you regain your sense of purpose.
Thank you Liz! I’m sorry to hear you feel like you’ve lost your direction but comforted to know it isn’t just me. All we can do is live day by day with gratitude and curiosity ❤️
How amazing to see you and watch this - I have your CREATE book - your publisher sent it my way and it's lovely - and fun fact - we both have an Anthropologie history and we both worked with Debi Treloar on our books! I worked with her on my first 2 - she's wonderful! I am hoping I'll work with her again for maybe my 5th. I am so happy watching this because I sense a kindred spirit in you and am happy to read you and discover your writing here - wonderful!
Thanks Holly! It's so lovely to be connected with you on Substack. I've followed your career for a long time and enjoy everything you do. And yes we do have a lot in common! Debi is wonderful as you say and I was lucky to have her shoot one of my books x
I really appreciated how honest you were in your video. I have that "stuck" feeling at times too - especially since 2020 when I lost my magazine, it was really hard and I've still not fully recovered tbh. I keep thinking like you - there has to be still something for me - something I'm missing - I came here for that (Substack) but am honestly just not sure...
This feels like a much more personal experience and I’m looking forward to seeing where you take us!
I am curious to see your decision processes in video form, perhaps. I’m intrigued by your stack of miss-matched tiles and how you would go about putting them all together. There is a process, isn’t there?
Would you believe I took up knitting during the pandemic and was inspired by an Irish designer, Carol Feller, who led us on a journey to use up miss-matched wool in a free form jumper. The journey was most enjoyable.
Thanks for taking us along with you. Staying enthusiastic and inspired in our creative endeavours is difficult and it’s easy to get lost.
I love your intro and how exciting to be exploring this option! I am, very slowly, restyling our house that we moved into two years ago and I keep returning to your gorgeous books for inspiration.
I have come to Substack (as a reader) for similar reasons to you, I also have this feeling that I’m looking for something - I don’t know what it is yet, but I keep searching and I think I’ll know when I find it! Like I’ll look back and say “that was it!”.
Since you asked for suggestions...
I’d love to see how you go about the work you’re doing on your new house, and your general approach to styling. The behind-the-scenes, as you said.
It would be amazing to see video interviews/house tours of inspiring interiors, like a video version of your books. Since you mentioned you like doing videos :)
Something else that could be fun is if you maybe led a community of people who love this same aesthetic and maybe create opportunities for readers to share projects or inspiration and maybe open up a conversation?

BTW - I would love to know how you make those drawings on your ipad, I'd love to learn that. :)

Thanks Sandra! It’s really useful and encouraging to read your comments and I’ll keep them in mind as I formulate posts.

Excited for where you might take this!

Great suggestions Shems! I really like these ideas and luckily most of them are already part of the plan. Thanks for following and participating!
