I found this a really interesting read and one I could relate with. I’m unsure how Substack works but I listen to your podcast and follow you on instagram so thought I would give it a whirl and I am really enjoying it. I found that I had turned into a scroller of images on instagram while we have been doing a full renovation of our farmhouse and had lost my energy and interest in reading, even a magazine article felt too much. But I am back and am hoping to rediscover my love for words and allowing my mind to create, instead of being absorbed in an image. Thank you
Thank you Louise. Which podcast are you referring to? I don’t actually have one... regardless, I’m glad you’ve discovered this platform and are getting back to reading longer form pieces. I think many people feel the same and are moving away from the endless scroll culture of other apps. Thanks for reading my piece 😊
Hi, sorry I said I wasn’t sure how to use Substack yet lol. I was meant to be commenting on Kate Watson-smyth feed and then discovered you and clearly can’t leave the comment on the correct one. Must do better ha
Ha ha don’t worry! That makes sense and I’ve done the same on Instagram actually when people have sent me links to other people’s accounts 😂 Substack can be confusing to navigate
I first found you through your Bohemian Modern book years ago, I then purchased your others books and I always refer to them the most. As I've mentioned before on Instagram I love your imperfect approach to interiors and infact it helped me to change my way of thinking, which was "everything has to look insta-perfect" a notion which used to make me feel quite honestly, crap and a failure. Life Unstyled and Create are my two most favourite interiors books ❤️ I look forward to reading more on here :)
That’s exactly why I do what I do! Thank you thank you. I’m so chuffed to hear my books are among your favourites. Thank goodness things have changed somewhat regarding insta-perfection although not 100%
Couple of days ago I attended a very inspiring worshop for bulding emotional stamina and confidence. One of the few sentences that stucked with me is for example this one; '' I'm not selling myself, I'm not trying to impress all I'm doing is to bringing a gift :)
That sounds like a brilliant workshop! And so relevant today when it feels like everyone is trying to sell a version of themselves in some way. Thanks for sharing.
So brilliantly put, Emily. I love your writing and your perspective 💚
Thanks Jess!

Would enjoy reading your thoughts about why you enjoy imperfection and feel more comfortable with it.
Me too Margaret. It’s a constant work in progress accepting my ‘lived in’ interiors!
And yet most of us live that way - imperfectly 😊
I’ll move that one to the top of the list then :)
